Glenn Greenwald's discussion of factory farming, the SOB Act, and the rescue of the Ridglan beagles from animal testing highlights the power of nonpartisan outreach
I too am a Breaking Points fan. It is my primary source for news, along with Glenn Greenwald. Thanks for sharing. The show recently achieved 2 million followers. If you find you like Breaking Points for all the reasons Karen laid out, be sure to share them as a resource with all your family and friends.
Ed, you write, "I too am a Breaking Points fan" to which I respond, imagine my surprise. I am sure you share with me frustration that there is generally so little coverage of animal issues but, like me, don't blame the hosts for that but realize that our movement has got to do a better job on outreach.
Karen, you are right, the gap is less about the hosts and more about our movement not making enough noise to break through. So maybe the solution is obvious: DawnWatch and Animal Politics team up and launch the first all-animals news network. If we build it, maybe they will finally have to cover us.
Ha!!! Love it in ways. It's not about not making enough noise, it's about making the wrong kind of noise. Do you have a copy of my book Thanking the Monkey? If not I'll bring you one this summer. In the very last section, called Talk The Walk, I note that folks who love animals are whispering there love, or shouting in a voice that doesn't sound like love at all.
There is already an all animal news network, unchained news, and Jane Velez Mitchell who runs it seems to have a level of energy I can only aspire to, but her tone in general is almost diametrically opposed to that with which you and I generally lead.
And now, sadly, there's now something called the vegan News Network, or something like that, which took the Dawnwatch idea of the power of giving feedback to Media, but whereas DawnWatch is all about letting media folks know when they do something right, and has really had some incredible successes that I'm proud of, the new one is all about haranguing media when they get it wrong -- you know, just in case vegans weren't already hated enough. “ Let's make enemies of the major media on behalf of animals!”
I had thought about wanting to do an animal show but am lately more and more interested in creating media that makes sure animals are included, the way Vox does, on the left , and Glenn Greenwald does, and Breaking Points so rarely does, but which we can hopefully see more of.
Looking forward to talking with you about all of this.
Of course, you are right, it about making "the right kind of noise", which explains why we do what we do. Yes, I know Jane. A have a funny story involving Jane from when I was in NYC. I'm ashamed to say I have not read Thanking the Monkey. If you are open to it, if you send me a PDF manuscript, I'd be happy to review it for the Animal Politics audience. Here is a link to some of the book reviews I've done: https://animalpolitics.substack.com/s/book-reviews
Couldn't agree more with you: animal rights should be a nonpartisan cause. And actually is. Many conservative groups have spoken passionately about these issues. Also, I hadn't heard of Breaking Points. A big YES to this: "He attracts a large mainstream audience before whom he intermittently, seriously, and passionately discusses animal issues. Animals need more advocates who can do that!" Also, images and videos are the most impactful way to get the point across. Very grateful for WeAnimals for providing free images and footage to any media that wants it.
Johanna, I think you will love Breaking Points! To be honest, there is not as much debate at the moment as usual, because all four hosts, two conservative and two liberal are aligned against the Iran War (and because of that I wish they would have on thoughtful guests he saw things otherwise and presented the pro-war side, even I would not personally support it). But when there are differences, it is so great to hear things from both sides.
Is Glenn Greenwald, who has his own show, which used to be on Rumble but is now on Substack, familiar to you? He is one of the most articulate people on the planet. And fabulous on animals!
Having been involved with animal advocacy for many years and especially with assisting in presenting the Televised Annual GENESIS AWARDS, along with you, which did indeed spread our word in a positive manner, I have principally been involved with writing letters to Media Editors on this issue, as DAWNWATCH emphasizes . Now I daily read Animal Politics and Animals 24-7, but will add Breaking Points as you suggest and agree with you about the wisdom of being bipartisans . I gladly accept those voices who speak for our issues, no matter what party they prefer, though have noted for years of reading the HWAF (HSUS) yearly review of how various legislators vote on our issues, so many of the Republican Party receive F's ! Not encouraging! I'm sickened by the clout that industry lobbyists have to negate our advocacy legislation and regrettably aware that the primarily Agricultural states, though few, have such a powerful voice, and certainly currently have the full support of this administration. If the Ridglan Farms issue can invite members of both parties plus independents to become more involved ,that is a good. To disallow cultivated meat to be purchased in states with a Republican majority is frustrating and undemocratic. Thank you!
To EVERYONE who gives a damn about protecting rabbits, ESPECIALLY ALL RABBIT RESCUES; PLEASE call or email the following city officials who passed this repugnant ordinance that FAILS to protect rabbits from being slaughtered for human or other food consumption, (but it’s prohibited to slaughter chickens in the backyard chicken ordinance), FAILS to mandate sterilization to prevent breeding and hoarding (but it’s mandated for cats), FAILS to mandate the lifesaving RHDV2 vaccine to prevent rabbits from hemorrhaging to death.
Instead, these reckless bastards, EVEN AFTER BEING FULLY INFORMED 3 RABBITS FROZE TO DEATH, WHEN THEIR NEGLIGENT OWNER FAILED TO REFILL THEIR FROZEN WATER BOTTLE AND DID NOTHING TO CHECK ON THEM FOR DAYS STILL PASSED THIS UNCONSCIONABLE CRAP ORDINANCE:
Rabbits shall not be left outside overnight from 11pm-7am
Rabbits shall not be left outside in temperatures below 43 degrees, or above 82 degrees
The lazy ACO won’t even get off her ass to do anything about cats prohibited from being outside from 11pm-7 am, so this piece of garbage ordinance will not be enforced for the rabbits. And the cops are NOT going to drive up and down every block every night to make sure rabbits aren’t outside during prohibited times and temperatures.
These morons copied/pasted the dog ordinance to use for rabbits. They couldn’t be any stupider if they tried.
The next council meeting is Tuesday, May 19th at 7pm PLEASE SPEAK UP FOR THE RABBITS WHETHER YOU EMAIL, CALL, OR SHOW UP IN PERSON. AND GET THIS TO EVERY ANIMAL RIGHTS/WELFARE GROUP OUT THERE.
AND ESPECIALLY ALL OF THE RABBIT RESCUES/SHELTERS/FOSTERS
Mayor: (also Asst. Wayne County Prosecutor; he KNOWS better &STILL FAILED to protect rabbits1)

I share your love of Breaking Points, and of animal advocacy that puts animals before politics.
Thanks for commenting Jana. The more animal advocates willing to put animals before politics, the kinder the world will be.

I was not familiar with Glenn Greenwald. I will check out his Substack.

Elaine, you are a treasure.
Great to see this covered on Breaking Points.
